So, just a few weeks ago the Port opened up an ice-fishing “village” down at the quays, and now they’re bringing back the ice canoe races?! Someone at the Old Port Corporation seems to want winter tourism to rival that of the summer!
For those who aren’t familiar with ice canoe racing (such as yours truly, to be honest), the extreme sport pits teams of canoists against each other, running through freezing cold puddles across frozen rivers and paddling through ice-cold water. Spectators are not expected to share in the discomfort.
From the lookout point under the Clock Tower Quay, spectators will also be treated to music, entertainment, and a historical interpretation about ice canoes with ethnologist. In addition, there will be hot beverages and treats.
Races start at 12:45, on Saturday, Feb. 23, and the awards ceremony is at 4 PM.
