We’re in the last few weeks of the apple picking season in the Montreal region, so don’t forget to take advantage of this special time of year. Apple picking and pumpkin picking are great family outings, and the fun can continue at home making treats with the day’s harvest.

Head on down to the port this long-weekend (August 29 to September 1) and you might wonder if you are still in Montreal.

The 2014 incarnation of the Orientalys Festival takes over the Quays for 3 days and invites you to go “on a part-real part-imaginary journey through the Orient by way of a colourful medina reminiscent of the old Suks.”

Every year in August, the Jacques-Cartier Quay moves to the beat of bold fusions and original shows crossing three continents from North Africa to China, by way of Spain, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Iran Cambodia, India and Japan as well as many other Eastern countries! Performances, workshops, animation, exhibitions and activities for children and adults are on the program each year – all around a veritable Oriental Medina!

Besides free outdoor shows, there will be activities, workshops, entertainment features and exhibitions intended for young and old alike.

The Quays of the Old Port can be reached with a short walk from Place d’Armes metro.

If not the king of Montreal festivals, then certainly one of the crown jewels, this year’s Just for Laughs fest runs nearly the entire month of July, from the 9th through the 28th, (the outdoor site of Just for Laughs Festival opens at noon every day from July 12th to July 26th).

Though the big draw of the festival is the pantheon of comedy greats performing in clubs and theatres around the city, the free outdoor attractions are being given greater importance. Not just limited to weekends anymore, you can now pop down to Quartiers des Spectacles (Place des Arts metro) any day of the week to find  live comedy, circus arts with clowns and acrobats, sideshow antics, stilt walkers, street dancing and more.
