fetedeneigesThis upcoming weekend marks the start of the city of Montreal’s biggest family winter festival, the Fete des Neiges.

This year is the festival will run over four consecutive weekends, from January 17 to February 8, 2014 on site at Parc Jean Drapeau (metro Jean-Drapeau) from 10 AM to 8 PM Saturdays and 10 AM to 6 PM Sundays.

As is usual for the festival, you can expect to enjoy 10 lanes of tube sliding including evening “disco tubing”, a 300-foot long zip-line, dog sledding, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, boot and ice hockey, and snow-scootering. New attractions include skating along the river, and a ferris wheel, carousel and a labyrinth.

Unfortunately, many of the attractions charge admission fees, but there is an ACCROPasse package deal which includes almost everything (plus additional discounts) for all 8 days for $48 for a family of four. Skates, scooters, skis and snowshoes are also available for rental.

If you want to leave your wallet at home, you can still enjoy FREE activities which include the cross-country skiing introduction, snow sculpting, snow scooter racing, a climbing tower, the ice skating path, and others. Plus there’s the general joie de vivre of the Fete.

The kids are home for 2 weeks. Yay! maybe you get to sleep in for a change. Wait… the kids are home for two weeks!! What am I gonna do with the kids for two weeks?!

Here are some of our off-the-cuff ideas for free / cheap outings that are fun for both parents and kids. If you have any of your own suggestions to add, please feel free to do so in the comments area below!

Outdoors on Mount Royal

Every day until 9 PM, the rental office is open at Beaver Lake for snowshoes, cross-country skis, and ice skates. If you have your own skates already, the rink admission is free.. Similarly, the toboggan run at Beaver Lake and inner-tube rentals are also open.

winterfun

Tobogganing

If you slip around to the East side of Mount Royal, you’ll find a great long toboggan run down the slope towards Parc Ave., and Murray Hill park in Westmount is also a significant run.

At these Grand Parcs of Montreal you’ll find free groomed hills to get your adrenaline rushing:

Free Ice – Great View

Have some outdoor fun at the winter village on the grounds of the Olympic Stadium. There is free ice-skating, sliding, and performances by musicians, singers, storytellers.

On the weekends, STM transit pass holders can get free pass to the Olympic Tower!

Noel dans le Parc – until the 25th

21th anniversary edition – spanning 3 parks! More than 50 free spectacles are offered at parc Lahaie(corner Saint-Joseph and Saint-Laurent, Plateau-Mont-Royal), parc des Compagnons-de-Saint-Laurent(corner Cartier and Mont-Royal, Plateau-Mont-Royal), and Parc Olympique (corner Pie-IX and Pierre de Coubertin, Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve).

Place Spectacles Luminotherapie & etc.

An incredible art installation of light and sound. PLUS a series of video projections and interactive game scattered around the Place. definitely an evening thing… but when evenings are beginning at 3:30 PM, it’s not so late.

But it’s so coooold out!

OK, well there’s always:

  • Free Santas at the Stewart exhibit down at Parc Jean Drapeau
  • Free Family Weekend activities at the Museum of Fine Arts
  • Take a swim at the Aquadome – it’s inexpensive and with a kids splash pool, a couple of water slides, a theraputic jet pool and a HUGE swimming pool the place will eat up an afternoon.
  • Not exactly a cheap option, but consider indoor play areas. There’s a good directory of them at So What’s Doing, but be sure to check holiday hours before heading out.
  • Don’t forget about the Biodome, Insectarium and Planetarium. They’ve got special animations and programs for the holidays, and the price for a family visit (especially with an Acces Card) is not a bank-breaker.
  • McCord Museum “Island of Toys” exhibit –
From December 21 to 24, December 26 (starting at Noon), from December 27 to 31, 2014 and January 2 (starting at Noon), and January 3 and 4, 2015Each day:

    • Discover The Island of Toys exhibition and the treasure hunt.
    • Story Hour at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. in collaboration with L’école des loisirs.

    Sundays December 21, 28, 2014 and January 4, 2015

    • History puts on its Sunday best for the treasures of The Island of Toys! Make a treasure map using recycled materials.

Give a gift that keeps on giving – shave your man all year long!

You know how every time you need to get refill ink cartridges for your computer printer, you lose a little of your soul (and sanity) when faced with the phenomenon of the ink costing almost the same as a brand new printer? A brand new printer which comes with ink!

Well imagine what us blade-razor-using guys have to stomach every time we need to fill up on blade cartridges. You buy a new handle and a couple of starter blades for $5, but a small pack of new blades alone can easily run double or triple that cost. (An aside… I’ve never priced women’s razors and blades. Is it the same brutal reality?)

Recently I decided to review the Dollar Shave Club to see if it could be the answer to this ongoing woe. The service promises to furnish you with a new razor and blades upon sign-up, and then to regularly send you a pack of fresh blades at a fraction of the cost you’d pay in stores, saving you not only money but also time (and sanity). Their hip and user-friendly web site lays out the options clearly, and the simplicity of those option suggests a business whose intent is just to do one thing – and do it well.

You have 3 plans to choose from:

  • The Twin: a nothing-fancy razor using twin-blade cartridges – $3.50 per month
  • The 4X: a more refined razor with pivoting head using quad-blade cartridges – $6.50 per month
  • The Executive: an impressive-looking razor with a pivoting head using 6-blade cartridges with lubricating strips – $9.50 per month

Every plan sends you a pack of 4 new cartridges every month. Not hirsute enough to need to change out your cartridge every week? No problem, you can convert your plan to get delivery only every second month (and of course only be billed every second month).

So is it worth it?

I’ve been on the 4X plan for about 3 months now and my honest impressions are:

  • The razor is just fine, as good as any other with disposable blades
  • The blades are clean and sharp, though I get the impression that they dull a little faster than the brand-name blades – but so what, I’ve got an ongoing supply.
  • The blades and razor seem to be custom made for each other, meaning don’t expect to be able to use these blades on another brand handle.
  • The company is a pleasure to do business with (they did not sponsor this review and were unaware of its creation).
  • One gripe – I wish I could order a second razor… I like to have one at home and one for the gym. Sadly, the only way to do this seems to be to register for another account or to switch my current account to another plan.

Final impression? I’m not giving up my plan. $6.50 every two months to ensure fresh blades delivered to my door versus fuming in the pharmacy aisles at the $25 replacement packs that are never on sale when you need them and not even being certain which ones fit your 3-year-old handle? No brainer. To my sense of serenity it’s the difference between a kitten purring in your lap and a cat screeching in your yard… at 3:20 AM.
