265px-AFFICHE-2015-FIP-18x24Beginning Friday, the 3rd of July and running through to Sunday the 12th, the Festival international de Percussions (FIP), this year at the Vieux Port, is much more than a week of drum-banging.

This year, the festival has adopted a France-in-Montreal theme, with dancers, musicians, artists and more all contributing to an annual event that is fast becoming a recognized addition to Montreal’s summer festival environment.

In their own words,

the FIP is a cultural and family oriented organism that invites a public of all ages to discover the richness of dance and percussions. It is a participatory event in which the visitors serve both as spectators and actors. Reknowned for its ability to reunite diverse artistic disciplines, such as music, dance, photography, documentaries, gastronomy, workshops, conferences, visual arts and exhibitions. In 2015, the FIP transports you by France to discover its regions, its culture and its gastronomy. The Festival, with its affiliated partners, will share with you its musical richness and folk through a lot of percussion instruments, artists, dances…

The Festival begins with six affairs days inside the Marché Bonsecours and will follow with four last days in the Quai Jacques-Cartier to the Vieux-Port de Montréal.

On the new international stage, Brazil, Spain, Cuba, Peru, Japan, Jamaica, and a lot of other music styles are expecting you! DJ, outdoors and insiders performances ! A great meet between France, the music and dance world, from 3th to 12th July, will be a mix of rhythms and international culture in the Vieux-Montréal!!!

The CCA (Canadian Center for Architecture) offers this free creative workshop on Sunday July 5.

Should we twist it or rotate it? Why don’t we put the city inside it? How do we assemble it? Should we call it science or common sense? What should it wear today?

Work with little but dream big! Accept imperfection! Follow your instincts! Find design solutions to the five questions above and construct your own model in the spirit of jai tech.

For children ages 5 to 12, accompanied by an adult.

The workshop runs from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM and is free to attend. The CCA is at 1920 rue Baile, between Guy & Atwater metro.

Reserve a place for you and your family at 514 939 7026.

Please give us 24 hours notice if you need to cancel so that we can fill your spot. Given the high demand for our programs, families that are no-shows for their reservations will only be waitlisted for future programs.

If not the king of Montreal festivals, then certainly one of the crown jewels, this year’s Just for Laughs fest runs nearly the entire month of July, from the 8th through the 28th, (the outdoor site of Just for Laughs Festival opens at 1 PM every day from July 11th to July 25th).

Though the big draw of the festival is the pantheon of comedy greats performing in clubs and theatres around the city, the free outdoor attractions are being given greater importance. Not just limited to weekends anymore, you can now pop down to Quartiers des Spectacles (Place des Arts metro) any day of the week to find  live comedy, circus arts with clowns and acrobats, sideshow antics, stilt walkers, street dancing and more.

Free outdoor stand-outs include:

  • Weird Al Yankovic on stage on July 21
  • Wyclef Jean on stage July 20
  • The Twins Parade on July 18
