If not the king of Montreal festivals, then certainly one of the crown jewels, this year’s Just for Laughs fest runs nearly the entire month of July, from the 9th through the 28th, (the outdoor site of Just for Laughs Festival opens at noon every day from July 12th to July 26th).

Though the big draw of the festival is the pantheon of comedy greats performing in clubs and theatres around the city, the free outdoor attractions are being given greater importance. Not just limited to weekends anymore, you can now pop down to Quartiers des Spectacles (Place des Arts metro) any day of the week to find  live comedy, circus arts with clowns and acrobats, sideshow antics, stilt walkers, street dancing and more.

The family workshop runs from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM on each of the dates mentioned, and is free to attend, although you should call (514) 939 7026 to reserve a place. The CCA is at 1920 rue Baile, between Guy & Atwater metro.

This year, the festival has adopted a Japanese theme, with dancers, musicians, artists and more all contributing to an annual event that is fast becoming a tourist draw to the Longueuil / Montérégie region.

In their own words,

the FIP is a cultural and family oriented organism that invites a public of all ages to discover the richness of dance and percussions. It is a participatory event in which the visitors serve both as spectators and actors. Reknowned for its ability to reunite diverse artistic disciplines, such as music, dance, photography, documentaries, gastronomy, workshops, conferences, visual arts and exhibitions. For a third year, our 2014 edition includes a urban graffiti contest displaying the talent of street artists, based entirely on 2014 theme.

The free site on St. Charles Street will be buzzing with over 500 artists during the event as well as street performers and kiosks. On the weekend, enjoy family oriented days with activities for kids: creations of musical instruments using recycled items, shows for families of the “Relève” Stage, inflatable games, an electrical train, educational workshops, etc. A $3 “Jam” bracelet allows kids to take in everything they want!

Other workshops, presentations, classes and films are accessible by admission.

The FIP can be found along St Charles St. W in Longueuil between St. Jean St. and Charlotte St. (Google map here)
