Get Your Art On

Ever heard of Le Milieudown on Robin St (Beaudry metro)? Neither had we until recently, but this informal community space offers very inexpensive art, home & living workshops of all sorts almost on a daily basis! There’s also a cafe and kid’s area. Check them out and have some fun.

Once every month (or so), the smart McGill University scientists host an informal “Freaky Friday” at the Redpath Museum on campus. These free, public lectures explore the myths surrounding today’s science news topics and bust them with reality and fact.

Keeping things fun and light,  the lectures are typically followed by a popular film which is in some way related to the topic of the evening.

This Friday, October 17, the topic is “Molecules and Broadway Musicals” – how chemistry and music intersect and how some music is considered to be directly influenced by molecular energy.

The lecture begins at 5pm, and will be followed by the Broadway musical Phantom of the Opera. From experience, we recommend these events as being for 12 years and up.

The Redpath Museum is located at:
859 Sherbrooke Street W
Metro McGill/Peel

Place des Arts once again hosts the many free events of this year’s annual Arab World Festival (FMA). Although the festival officially runs from October 24 to November 8, free performances of music, song, dance, storytelling, painting, calligraphy, and projections are offered in the Espace culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme in Place des Arts starting October 17 through November 3, 2014. Each day offers something different, sometimes building on the previous day’s exhibition and sometimes serving a completely new sensation.

“…the Arab World Festival of Montreal (Festival du Monde Arabe de Montréal or FMA) is a thematic event dedicated to the meeting of Arabic and Western cultures. Through its four sections – Performing Arts, Culture Forum, Cinema, and Orientalys – the FMA presents modern bodies of work through original productions in dance, music, theater and multidisciplinary arts, debates, conferences, lectures and films. – See more at: http://www.festivalarabe.com/about-us/?lang=en#sthash.tknqhJyj.dpuf”

The CCA (Canadian Center for Architecture) offers this free creative workshop on Sunday September 28

How will new technology transform our urban spaces in 2050? How can we shape the future now? Let your imagination run wild in this futuristic design challenge. Working backwards from typical archeological studies, we test the creativity, rationality and linear-thinking skills of participants, who will each design a new and technologically advanced artifact, object or tool based on a future world scenario.

The drop-in workshop runs from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM and is free to attend. The CCA is at 1920 rue Baile, between Guy & Atwater metro.
