shoppingfromtheheart2small-f1b959c5A good friend of ours has done an incredible, extraordinary job over the past few years of growing this event from a few vendors and sponsors in a church hall to what it is today… a charity event and shopping night at the Pointe Claire Holiday Inn featuring music, a photo booth, dozens of vendors and some big corporate sponsors!

Shopping from the Heart takes place each year with a dual goal of supporting women entrepreneurs in business, as well as raising funds for Montreal children’s charities. This year marks SFTH’s 5th anniversary! With raffle prizes, a silent auction, door prizes and an fun, informal atmosphere, visitors can get their Mother’s day shopping done and enjoy meeting (and supporting) some enterprising women.

This year, SFTH takes place at the Holiday Inn Pointe Claire, (6700 Trans Canada) on Tuesday, May 5 from 7 to 10 PM.

There is a $10 donation fee which starts you off with 5 raffle tickets. More tickets can be purchased separately.

The CCA (Canadian Center for Architecture) offers this free creative program on Sunday April 26.

Celebrate Earth Day at the CCA with your family and friends! Come meet our neighbors from Éco-quartier Peter-McGill as they share hands-on ways you can make your everyday more sustainable: learn about the healing properties of indigenous plants, discover sprouting, and build your own worm composter. Then, explore the CCA gardens through an observation and tasting game with the SensoriuM that unearths the histories of familiar vegetation. Reserve your space at 514 939 7026.

Gardening with indigenous plants workshop
11 am–12 pm
During this hands-on workshop, you’ll start your own indigenous plant seeds and discover the medicinal properties of these plants. Free, reservations required.

Sprouting workshop
12–1 pm
Learn to eat green and locally, starting at home. Have you ever germinated seeds in your kitchen to be eaten raw? Join us for a fun and practical workshop on raw sprouts. All participants will leave with a kit to germinate seeds at home. Free, reservations required.

Vermi-composting workshop
1–2:30 pm
Join us for a workshop that smells like spring! Build your own worm composting starter kit and leave this workshop ready to turn food scraps into soil conditioner. All materials provided. Reservations required. $25 for the purchase of a vermi-compost starter kit ($15 if you bring your own container).

Gaming the Garden with the SensoriuM
2 :30–4 :30 pm
What can plants tell us about a place? In this exploratory game for all ages, you will use all of your senses (including taste!) to detect clues about the histories of a particular site, using local vegetation as a guide. Being attentive to what was there before allows us to think about sustainability in every sense: social, economic, and environmental. Free, reservations required.

The SensoriuM
Natalie Doonan is a multimedia and performance artist, writer, and educator. She is founder of the SensoriuM, a collaborative performance art project that features artist-led tours and tastings. Natalie’s work has been shown in the Cultural Olympiad for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the LIVEPerformance Art Biennale, the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, Montréal’s Elektra Festival and BIAN, Nuit Blanche, and Art Souterrain. She is currently working on Performigrations: People Are the Territory, a collaborative international mobile art installation while pursuing an interdisciplinary PhD in Humanities at Concordia University.

Attention all children, all those who are young at heart and all lovers of theatre, adventure and fun! Blue Planet is a play for children by the Icelandic author Andri Snær Magnason, adapted from his award-winning children’s book The Story of the Blue Planet. Although the play’s target spectators are children between the ages of eight and thirteen, Blue Planet will in fact enchant audiences of all ages.

633154_blueplanet_new

As a child, Magnason was captivated by “the Icelandic highlands, the cruelty of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, the weirdness of Icelandic folk tales, the Bible’s message of peace, the nature documentaries of David Attenborough and Space Lego”. Magnason manages to weave all of these eclectic threads seamlessly into Blue Planet. The result is a fast- paced narrative brimming with vivid characters. The play’s premise: what happens when a grown-up crash-lands on a planet inhabited solely by children? Factor in that said adult is Gleesome Goodday, Make-Your-Dreams-Come-True Man and Travelling Salesman; the possibilities for mayhem are endless! After Goodday lands on the beautiful island, he captivates the children who live there with astounding miracles. Not only does he give them the power of flight – he also nails the sun to the sky above their island so that it will “always be day and always be bright”. All appears to be well until two of the island’s children get blown off course to the dark side of the planet. They soon realize that Goodday’s intentions may not be as pure as he claims…
